The New American West: Photography In Conversation brings a fresh perspective to one of America’s most enduring icons. Co-curated by photography gallerist Howard Greenberg and art historian Carrie Scott, this exhibition examines the evolving identity of the West through the work of both legendary and contemporary photographers. The New American West exhibition will be open to the public at Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier Gallery in New York from June 12th to July 11th.

This thoughtfully curated show bridges history and modernity, pairing iconic imagery with new voices to explore the myths, realities, and cultural nuances of the American West. With Greenberg’s deep expertise, Scott’s unique approach to storytelling, and Yovanovitch’s refined design sensibility, the exhibition creates an engaging dialogue that is as visually striking as it is thought-provoking.

The idea for the New American West exhibition began as a way to celebrate the launch of Eisler and Riboud’s book West West—to extend the dialogue beyond the page. I pitched the concept to Howard as a cross-generational exploration of the American West, and he immediately saw its potential. His eye, experience, and deep commitment to photography were instrumental in shaping the show, which naturally evolved into a broader meditation on the West itself—its iconography, its contradictions, and its enduring hold on our imagination” - Carrie Scott

Eisler and Riboud’s  photographs are a study in contrasts—cinematic yet intimate, vast yet solitary. They explore the tension between nature’s grandeur and the traces of human presence, revealing the complex realities of the West today.” - Howard Greenberg

The New American West: Photography In Conversation

Curated By Howard Greenberg & Carrie Scott

The New American West: Photography In Conversation offers an opportunity to reflect on how the region has shaped—and continues to shape—our collective imagination. The show interrogates the myths, realities, and complexities of the West, weaving together the work of iconic artists with cutting-edge voices to create a conversation across generations.

The show was inspired by the collaborative journey of Maryam Eisler and Alexei Riboud, who traversed Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah in March of 2024, and purposefully highlights what sits at the core of their project; how photographers can experience the same landscapes through vastly different perspectives—one narrative and intimate, another reflective and minimal. As part of the exhibition launch West West: Twin Perspectives On The American West, a stunning new book by Eisler and Riboud, will make its debut. This dual-vision exploration of the West captures its complexities and contradictions through the distinct yet complementary lenses of two extraordinary artists. Shooting side by side but never sharing images, they documented the same landscapes in entirely different ways, proving that photography is shaped by perspective, not just optics.

Exhibition Highlights

The New American West brings together an extraordinary lineup of photographers whose works collectively redefine the West, including Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Esther Bubley, Mark Citret, Bruce Davidson, Liliane de Cock, Maryam Eisler, Frank Gohlke, Jungjin Lee, Danny Lyon, Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Alexei Riboud, Dennis Stock, Edward Weston, and Wim Wenders. These images challenge traditional tropes of the region, weaving together stories of resilience, identity, and cultural transformation.

A Conversation Across Time and Space
Replacing the myth of vast, uninhabited landscapes with layered and often contradictory narratives, the exhibition invites audiences to experience the West as a rich tapestry of stories and perspectives, sparking questions about identity, history, and freedom.

"Design and photography share a fundamental ability to shape perception and evoke emotion. With The New American West, we’ve approached the exhibition space as a dialogue between form and image—creating an environment where each photograph resonates within its surroundings. It’s been a privilege to create a setting that enhances the depth and complexity of these works and I cannot think of a better setting to homage to the American West than our U.S. flagship space.” — Pierre Yovanovitch

The exhibition will be showcased at designer Pierre Yovanovitch’s New York gallery. Known for his global portfolio of interior architecture projects and furniture designs, Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier New York serves as both a platform for his furniture collections and his U.S. headquarters.
