Seen Summer School: Making Art is Only Half the Job

£20.00

July 21, 2026, 5:30 pm - 7 pm UK time

This one and a half hour session breaks down the art world in real terms: how it works, who shapes it, and where you actually fit. Welcome to Seen Summer School.

The session will be recorded if you cannot join live.

After purchase is complete, you will receive a link to register for the webinar in your inbox.

There is no single art world. There is no clear entry point, no moment of arrival, no one path that leads to a career. What exists instead is an ecosystem, and webbed, messy, opaque, and often contradictory world. And most artists are trying to navigate it without ever being shown how it actually works.

You’re told to make good work, get a gallery, and build a career. But that version of the story leaves out almost everything that you need to know about: how value is constructed, how visibility translates into opportunity, and how relationships, timing, and positioning shape momentum.

This session is designed to bring that hidden structure into view. It’s a direct, practical breakdown of how the art economy functions and how you move within it. Not in theory, but in reality. And the first thing we will try to get you to realise is that your studio is a small business, and you need to treat it that way.

We’ll look at how different parts of the ecosystem operate, galleries, institutions, collectors, digital platforms, and why they don’t move in sync. We’ll unpack why some artists accelerate while others stall, and what actually drives progression over time. Most importantly, we’ll locate where you currently sit within that system, and how to make more intentional decisions about what comes next.

This is for artists who are feeling unclear, stuck, or tired of guessing. The goal is not to “crack” the art world, but to understand it well enough that you can move through it with clarity and on your own terms.
