Everything You Need To See At The Armory Show This Year

From September 24 to 27, 2026, at the Javits Center in New York City, with roughly 230 international modern and contemporary galleries exhibiting from over 30 countries.

Though this is the 32nd edition of The Armory Show, it has been moved this year, more than two weeks later than usual specifically to avoid clashing with Frieze Seoul, which I am all for because it gives us more time to get back into the swing of things before the autumn schedule makes us crazy. While some folks have interpreted the move as a sign that Frieze (who now own Armory) have prioritized the newer Asian franchise, I’m not so sure we need to be critically reading art fair business like we interpret paintings. In fact, I’d rather argue that sanity struck here. My art fair calendar certainly appreciates the shift in timing but, with all that said, Frieze still hasn’t solved the Armory’s identity problem. Whereas Frieze New York is kind of positioned as the selective prestige fair, the Armory optically looks more like a vast, sprawling marketplace at Javits. And even with new curatorial themes, emerging sections and institutional prizes, the underlying question still remains whether Frieze bought Armory simply so that they could eat up the competition.

And frankly, I worry about the scale of the thing. I am not so sure 230 galleries is evidence of strength, or evidence that size is the only status symbol it has left? Do that math here folks. If you spend just ten minutes in each booth - which hardly gives you a second to really look - you’d need 38 hours and 20 minutes. The Armory is open for roughly seven hours a day, so that would be nearly five and a half full fair days, without stopping to eat, queue, talk to anyone, use the loo or walk between booths. In other words: mathematically impossible during the four-day fair.
